Editorial: We recommend Mike Huckabee

Whatever Texas Republican primary voters do Tuesday, John McCain is all but guaranteed to be the party's presidential nominee. It is mathematically impossible for Mike Huckabee, the last remaining major GOP contender, to capture the nomination. The former Arkansas governor even turned up on Saturday Night Live recently to poke fun at himself for not going away.

Don’t sell out, fellow conservative. Vote your values.

It has been a very long time since Texas Republicans have had the chance to vote and speak their values in a Presidential Primary.  We have that opportunity right now.  The question is whether grassroots conservatives will be tricked into not voting their values by the media and establishment leaders.

The media and establishment has been so effective, that some who call themselves conservative have even wondered if they shouldn’t vote in the Democratic primary instead to affect their Presidential race. What a foolish decision that would be!  The voter would lose their ability to affect change within the Party, since they could not be a delegate to even their local convention, and it would rob every good conservative candidate down-ballot of the votes of conservatives.  It would be devastating for the future of conservatism in Texas.

More importantly, it would rob Texas conservatives of their voice in Texas at the one time they finally have the ability to speak nationally. Voting for Obama or Clinton will elevate the “values’ and principles they represent; and all other politicians, including Republicans, will gravitate towards those “values” if they show popular support.  We advance conservative principles when we vote for them and they are lifted up.  Whether your candidate wins or loses, uniting around those principles is crucial to the future, as Ronald Reagan showed with his shocking win in Texas in 1976.  He did not win the nomination in 1976, but what happened in Texas was the beginning of a movement that lead to his Presidency.

We have a clear conservative choice in the Texas Presidential Primary.  Gov. Huckabee is vastly superior across the board- on sanctity of life, 2nd Amendment rights, the definition of marriage and family, immigration (vs McCain-Kennedy), free speech (vs McCain-Feingold), on embryonic “clone and kill” stem cell research (McCain for, Huckabee against), on the Bush tax cuts (McCain voted against twice, Huckabee FOR), on judges (McCain’s gang of 14 with Democrats) and on issues from considering changing parties (McCain), to the Federal Marriage Amendment to keep marriage between one man and one woman (McCain voted against, Huckabee favors), to even the pro-life plank of the Republican Platform (McCain opposes the Life Amendment and thus plank added under Reagan, Huckabee supports the plank in full).

As conservatives, let’s send a message from Texas.  If we can’t send it, nobody can.  If we do, Gov. Huckabee will win Texas. It will be a shock like the Reagan win in 1976.  The country will ask “why,” and the answer will be those very conservative principles of life, family and freedom that we care deeply about and are willing to stand and fight for- no matter what. That will be a win for all conservatives, for the country, and even for the eventual Republican nominee.

Don’t sell out, fellow conservative.  Vote your values.  Vote for Huckabee. Let your voice be heard.
