Editorial: We recommend Mike Huckabee

Whatever Texas Republican primary voters do Tuesday, John McCain is all but guaranteed to be the party's presidential nominee. It is mathematically impossible for Mike Huckabee, the last remaining major GOP contender, to capture the nomination. The former Arkansas governor even turned up on Saturday Night Live recently to poke fun at himself for not going away.

A Kindred Spirit - Mike Huckabee

In 1977, while attending Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas, I met a fellow student with whom I immediately felt a kindred spirit…Mike Huckabee.  I was a full-time evangelist traveling all over the country at the time, sandwiching in time for education, and when I discovered he was doing advance work for the leading Southern Baptist evangelist in America, James Robison, I purposed to get to know him.  We developed a friendship during those days of schooling which we have maintained until the present.

In the early 80’s I conducted a crusade in a church in Arkansas, where Mike was doing a wonderful work and got to see firsthand his faithful and effective work as an innovative pastor.   Mike had an incredible grasp of how to use the media to reach people with the glorious message of the Gospel.  We saw over 100 people give their hearts to Jesus during that crusade effort.

Imagine my shock when I heard that Mike Huckabee had been elected a Lt. Governor in the State of Arkansas.  Then two years later through a chain of unfortunate events and the subsequent resignation of the sitting Governor of Arkansas, Mike was elevated to be the Governor of the State.

By that time I was pastoring First Baptist Church, Pearland, Texas, and my own focus of ministry had been dramatically impacted by my experiences there where we had placed three of our members on the city council and four members on the local school board.  I wrote Enough is Enough; A Call to Christian Involvement in 1996 and I began traveling around the country encouraging Pastors to engage the culture as salt and light.  My travels brought me to Arkansas and Governor Huckabee hosted an event at the Capitol.

I saw up close and personal how God was using Mike in his new role.  He served effectively as the Governor of Arkansas for ten and half years, transcending party affiliations and modeling for all to see how to be a Governor to all the people.  As a Republican in a heavily Democratic state, he was elected with strong margins three times earning the respect of Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Republicans, Democrats, and Independents.

When Mike entered the race for the Republican nomination for President, no one gave him a chance.  Now, on the eve of the Texas Primary, he has earned the respect of an entire country for his honesty, forthrightness, moral clarity and unwavering commitment to his core values.  Many mock and reject those core values, but no one doubts that Mike Huckabee genuinely holds them and because of that, he has earned the respect of his enemies as well as his friends.

I have dedicated myself to assisting this good man advance his campaign.  He is the real deal.  He is both a genuine Christian man and competent to lead the nation.  For me, the decision to back Mike Huckabee was easy.  I pray that you will use your influence to help us advance his candidacy as well.
